In
July 1999, a rare green violet-ear hummingbird, probably originating in
Mexico, appeared in Lafayette, Louisiana. Update!: The bird is now
officially called a Mexican Violet-Ear. It was documented at the home of Joe and Gail Andriano as the first of this beautiful species to appear in Louisiana. Gail has a knack for attracting odd birds, including of course her husband. Gail decided to name the bird "Maraca" because when he flew and flitted around the feeder he sounded like a maraca rattling with only a couple of beans in the gourd . . . . |
