Linguistic Autobiography. One of the goals of this course is to raise your awareness of how people relate to their own use of language. Toward this end, I'd like you to write a brief (1.5-2 pages) linguistic autobiography. You may submit it through Moodle or as a printed copy in class. Please follow standard MLA guidelines with regard to format. The assignment is due uploaded by Wednesday at noon, Jan 22 Think about your own realizations regarding language that have affected your current beliefs or behaviors. Childhood events, such as moving to a new part of the country or being punished for saying something "bad," sometimes prompt moments of realization that affect you for many years. You might also have had experiences as an adult that changed your perceptions about language. Here are some questions to guide you in thinking about your own history with language: 1) When did you first become aware that not everyone spoke the same language as you and your family? 2) When did you first become aware that even people who supposedly spoke the same language sometimes said things differently? 3) When did you first become aware that people judge certain linguistic expressions to be naughty or nice, and what do you think the basis for those judgments must have been? 4) When did you first become aware that some people judge certain expressions to be grammatically right or wrong, and what do you think the basis for their judgments must have been? 5) Do you have any personal goals that relate to your own use of language? What has contributed to your forming these goals? |
