CODI 504  VOICE DISORDERS
Assignment Four   Due Friday Nov 1 by 2:00 pm

In order to evaluate quality , we are going to be using the Multi-Dimensional Voice Program which is a component installed on the CSL computer set-up you used for measuring frequency.  From the menu, you will select the MDVP option (instead of CSL Pitch as you did in assignment 2) and following the prompts.

1.    Follow the suggestions in your text (pg 92 - 93) for elicitation procedures.  Also refer to the documentation provided with the MDVP for specific pointers on
        obtaining the best results.

2.     You will be recording at least 3 repetitions of the vowel /a/ and reporting averages for several types of jitter, shimmer and HNR.  Be sure to use similar pitches
and intensity levels on each of the three recordings.

3.   Report you client's average across the three repetitions for the following measures:

        a.  Jita
        b.  Jitt
        c.  PPQ
        d.  RAP
        e.  sPPQ
        f.  APQ
        g.  sAPQ
        h.  ShdB
        i.  Shim
        j.  vAm
        k. VF0
        l.  NHR
        m. VTI

4.    Of the 5 jitter measurements and 4 shimmer measurements provided by the MDVP, which are considered the preferred measures of jitter and shimmer by the makers of this software? (Hint - Look in the MDVP manual for this information)

5.   What do the measures vAm and VF0 reveal about the voice sample?

6.   How do the measures NHR and VTI differ.  What do each reveal about the voice sample?

7.   What does the research literature tell us about the relationship between perceptual and acoustic measures of voice quality?  How should these measures of quality be used clinically?
