Chemistry 108 is a course of general chemistry. It is designed as a course of basic chemistry that, with Chemistry 107, prepares students for more advanced courses in chemistry as well as courses in science and engineering. It is sometimes used as a science elective.

Prerequisites are Chemistry 105 or 107 and Mathematics 105 or 140/143.

The textbook used in the course is General Chemistry-The Essential Concepts, 7th edition by Raymond Chang and Kenneth Goldsby (ISBN 978-0-07-340275-8). Chapters 12-19 and 21 will be covered. This will include material on liquids and solids, solutions, reaction rates, gaseous and solution equilibria, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and nuclear reactions.

Your final grade in the course will be based on the results of four hour exams (maximum of 100 points each), and a comprehensive final exam. The final exam will count for a maximum of 100 or 200 points, whichever helps your grade more. On the day each hour exam is handed back, a grade scale will be given so that you will know the letter grade that corresponds to the numerical grade on your test. The hour exams are scheduled for:

            February 4

            March 1

            March 24

            April 21

The final exam will be Friday May 6 at 8 AM.

Students may not share a calculator during an exam. Calculators used on an exam must have only a single display and must display numbers only. (no graphing calculators).

A student receiving outside help while taking an exam will be asked to withdraw from the course.  If this occurs after the last day for dropping the course, the student will be given an F for the course. Outside help includes, but is not limited to, the use of graphing calculators and cell phones.

If a student is absent on the day an hour exam is given and if the absence is excused, then the student will make up the exam this way: the questions on the final exam that pertain to the same material as the questions on the exam missed will be graded separately and this will form the grade for the missed exam.  An absence is excused for only two reasons:

                     1) sickness

                     2) death in family

An excuse must be given to me in writing and signed by the student.  If an absence is unexcused, a zero will be given for the exam missed.  Only one test may be made up this way.  If more than one test is missed, then all but one of the missed exams must be taken before the final exam.

Roll is not taken and attendance is not required but in the past, poor attendance has almost always resulted in low grades.

My office is Room 216, Montgomery Hall.  Office hours will be posted next to the door to Room 216.

A map of this floor is posted near the elevator marking the evacuation route and the Designated Rescue Area.  This is an area where emergency service personnel will go first to look for individuals who need assistance in exiting the building.  Students who may need assistance should identify themselves to the teaching faculty.
